Some people call this book 12 of the Rangers Apprentice series, others book 1 of the Royal Ranger. For me this is a linking book, linking the Ranger’s Apprentice with the new Royal Ranger series. Will is not the main character in this series, he now has an apprentice and she becomes the main character.
At the start of this book an overwhelming calamity strikes Will. He is determined to punish those responsible even if it means he has to hand in his oakleaf. It is Halt who finds the solution, an apprentice. It is a request that Will cannot refuse. Training an unruly apprentice is challenging. Will also discovers a smuggling ring. He has to decide whether he continues with revenge or to save innocent lives. I enjoyed Will showing traits of Halt. STAR RATING 5 OUT 5.
